Unlocking a Three Digit Master Luggage Lock

Master Locks, which are mostly Transportation Security Administration approved, allow you to set your own combination, as they are meant to be personalized. But what if you've forgotten the combination?

The temptation might be there to go through every number, but that's not necessary. Here's how to unlock a three digit master luggage lock, even if you don't remember the combination.

Unlocking with the Combination
·         Turn the dial on your combination lock until the numbers show right-side-up. Roll the dial farthest to the left, until the first combination number lines up with the harsh mark to the left of the dial.

·         Turn the middle of the dial until the correct number aligns with the number to its left. The same goes for the ones to the right. At this point, your combination should show left-to-right, positioned in line with the scored hash marks.

·         Try to separate the body of the lock, without turning any of the dials, by pulling it away from the U-shaped metal ring. Doing this will click open the lock and expose the hook.

Unlocking without the Combination

Step one: The first step is to put pressure on the mechanism by pulling away the body of the lock from the U-shaped ring. Try to get the body away from its attachment, and if the lock is not attached, use your fingers to apply pressure to the U-shaped ring, to get it away from the body of the lock.

Step two: Keep steady pressure on the mechanism and slowly roll the dial that's closest to the U-shaped ring. The dial will be hard to roll over three consecutive numbers, which will cause one of the numbers to eventually click. When you hear that click, that's the first number to your combination.

Step three: Repeat the steps in #2 with the middle dial, followed by the farthest dial. Move on to the next dial as soon as you find the number. The combination will eventually pull through, giving you access by pulling the U-ring away from the body of the lock.

How to Reset your Combination

Hold the lock in a way that the numbers turn away from you. Set the combination so that it releases the U-shaped ring. Next, in a counterclockwise 90 degrees motion, turn the hook of the U-shaped ring until the body of the hook and the stem line up.

As far as it can go, push the stem of the hook way down, into the body of the lock.

While depressing the hook into the body of the lock, turn it another 90 degrees in a counterclockwise motion. Roll the dials until you find a new combination.

Last of all, raise the stem out of the body of the lock by turning the hook 90 degrees clockwise. Push it back into its position as you turn it another 90 degrees in a clockwise motion. You now have a new combination for your three digit master luggage lock!
